Wall Sconces 101: Where They Work and Why

Wall Sconces 101: Where They Work and Why

Wall sconces are one of the most underused lighting tools in a home — probably because most people only think of them as a substitute for a table lamp instead of what they actually do best: fill in the light a ceiling fixture misses.

Flanking a bed is the classic use, and for good reason. Sconces free up nightstand space and put reading light exactly where you need it, without a lamp cord in the way. Mount them about 60–65cm above the mattress, roughly at shoulder height when you're sitting up.

In a hallway, sconces spaced every 1.8–2.4m create even, ambient light without a string of harsh overhead fixtures. This is where a simple, repeating design works better than a statement piece — consistency matters more than drama here.

Beside a bathroom mirror, sconces mounted at eye level on either side of the mirror give more even, shadow-free light on your face than a single fixture mounted above it — worth considering if your bathroom lighting has ever made getting ready feel harder than it should.

The detail people forget: check whether you need a hardwired sconce or a plug-in version before you buy. A hardwired fixture needs an electrician if there's no existing wiring at that wall — a plug-in sconce sidesteps that entirely and is worth considering for a rental or a quick refresh.
