How to Choose the Right Pendant Light for Every Room

A pendant light seems simple until you're standing in front of twenty options, unsure which one actually fits your space. The right choice comes down less to style and more to where it's hanging and what it needs to do.

Over a kitchen island, hang pendants so the bottom of the shade sits about 75–90cm above the counter — low enough to feel intentional, high enough that no one's ducking around it. If your island is long, two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly usually look better than one oversized fixture stretched to fill the space.

Over a dining table, a single statement pendant works well when it's centered and sized to roughly two-thirds the width of the table. This is where you can go bolder with a sculptural glass or metal shade — it becomes the room's focal point.

In an entryway, go smaller and simpler. This is a passing-through space, not a place to linger, so the fixture should feel welcoming without demanding attention.

One rule that saves most people from a mismatch: measure your ceiling height before you fall in love with a fixture. A dramatic, elongated pendant that looks stunning in a photo can overwhelm a standard 2.4m ceiling — check the drop length against your actual space first.
